No danger unless you are a turtle

I was riding the Tour Down Under course and encountered a turtle which made me wonder.... are cyclists more attuned to the environment? Some car drivers in their safe environment seem to show the same disdain for human life in the form of cyclists as they do for wildlife. Is there some psychological reason that makes them feel remote from anything outside their car? Is this something that could, in the form of education, help our cause? Just a thought.....
